プロフィール
“B級映画の帝王”の異名をとり、ハリウッドに多大な影響を与えた映画人。自伝「私はいかにハリウッドで100本の映画をつくり、しかも10セントも損をしなかったか」（90）の題名どおり、低予算・早撮りで大量の作品を世に送り出し、かつ利益を生み出した。初めて売れた脚本による映画「Highway Dragnet（原題）」（54）には、共同製作者としても名を連ねる。「ファイブ・ガン あらくれ五人拳銃」（55）で監督デビュー。その後15年間で約50作品のメガホンをとり、その多くは独立系スタジオ「アメリカン・インターナショナル・ピクチャーズ（AIP）」から発表された。わずか2日で撮影された「リトル・ショップ・オブ・ホラーズ」（60・日本劇場未公開）をはじめ、「血まみれギャングママ」（70・日本劇場未公開）や「デス・レース2000年」（75／製作）は今でもカルト的な人気を誇る。「レッド・バロン」（71）の後、監督業から手を引いてプロデューサーとして活躍。キャリアを通して約400本の製作に携わる。配給会社「ニュー・ワールド・ピクチャーズ」を設立し、イングマール・ベルイマン（スウェーデン）や黒澤明、フェデリコ・フェリーニ（イタリア）の作品を米国で公開した。コーマンの現場“コーマン学校”からは、フランシス・フォード・コッポラ、ジョナサン・デミ、ジェームズ・キャメロン、マーティン・スコセッシ、ロバート・デ・ニーロ、ジャック・ニコルソンといった大物が輩出されている。
