アイルランド出身。フィクション作家としてキャリアをスタート。81年映画「エクスカリバー」の脚本に携わったことから、同作のメイキング映像のスタッフも務める。翌82年、「殺人天使」（日本劇場未公開）で監督デビューを果たし、続く「狼の血族」（84）で脚光を浴びる。「モナリザ」（86）のヒットを経て、「俺たちは天使じゃない」（89）でアメリカに進出。まもなく母国に戻り、「クライング・ゲーム」（92）でアカデミー監督賞にノミネート、脚本賞を受賞した。再びハリウッドに渡りメガホンをとった「インタビュー・ウィズ・ヴァンパイア」（94）は大ヒットを記録する。続く「マイケル・コリンズ」（96）でベネチア国際映画祭の金獅子賞、「ブッチャー・ボーイ」（97／日本劇場未公開）でベルリン国際映画祭の銀熊賞（監督賞）を受賞する。その後の作品に「ことの終わり」（99）、「プルートで朝食を」（05）、「ビザンチウム」（13）など。
