父親は映画監督のフランシス・フォード・コッポラ。父親が監督した「ゴッドファーザー」（72）と続編「PART2」（74）に端役で映り、最終章「ゴッドファーザーPART3」（89）でアル・パチーノの娘役を演じた。その後、写真家やデザイナーとして活躍し、自ら脚本を手がけた「ヴァージン・スーサイズ」（99）で長編映画監督デビュー。続く「ロスト・イン・トランスレーション」（03）はアカデミー脚本賞に輝く。長編第3作「マリー・アントワネット」（06）を経て、「SOMEWHERE」（10）はベネチア国際映画祭の金獅子賞を受賞。ハリウッドを代表する女性監督として地位を確立し、「ブリングリング」（13）などで女性主人公たちを生き生きと描いた。「The Beguiled ビガイルド 欲望のめざめ」（17）ではカンヌ国際映画祭の監督賞を受賞。16年にはオペラ「椿姫」の演出に挑んだ。私生活では99年に映画監督のスパイク・ジョーンズと結婚、03年に離婚した。
