祖父はイタリア人で、一家は1904年にアメリカに移住。米デトロイトに生まれたコッポラは、カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校の映画コース在学中に監督作「グラマー西部を荒らす」（61）を発表。その後、ロジャー・コーマンのプロダクションに入り、62年に「ディメンシャ13」で長編映画監督デビュー。72年に公開された「ゴッドファーザー」が世界的に大ヒットし、第45回アカデミー賞では作品賞を含む3部門を受賞。続く「ゴッドファーザー PART II」（74）も、第47回アカデミー賞で作品賞、監督賞、脚色賞を受賞した。さらに「地獄の黙示録」（79）では、第32回カンヌ国際映画祭で最高賞のパルムドールを受賞し、世界的名匠としての地位を確固たるものにした。「ドラキュラ」（92）を監督してからは、製作者としての活躍を中心としている。父は音楽家であり、「ゴッドファーザー パートII」（74）や「地獄の黙示録」（79）などの音楽を手がけたカーマイン・コッポラ。妹は女優のタリア・シャイア。息子のロマンと娘のソフィアは映画監督、甥は俳優のニコラス・ケイジと、一族が映画業界で活躍している。
