50年代にTVからキャリアをスタートさせ、「大砂塵」（54）で映画デビュー。55年、ジェームズ・ディーン主演「理由なき反抗」「ジャイアンツ」に立て続けに出演するが、ディーンの死後ハリウッドの監督たちと意見が合わなくなり、活動の場をニューヨークに移す。そして69年、アメリカン・ニューシネマの代表作である「イージー・ライダー」を監督し注目を集める。だが、続く「ラストムービー」で再びスタジオと衝突し、ハリウッドの異端児と称されるようになる。ドラッグ依存から公私共に落ち込むが、「地獄の黙示録」「ブルー・ベルベット」で名演を見せ、その他「ランブル・フィッシュ」「リバース・エッジ」「スピード」など多数の話題作に出演した。10年5月29日、前立腺ガンの併発症でロサンゼルスの自宅で死去。TVシリーズ「クラッシュ」が遺作となり、映画では声優として参加した「alpha and omega」が最後の作品になる。
