米カリフォルニア州立大で演劇を専攻するが、退学しニューヨークへ。コメディアンとして「サタデー・ナイト・ライブ」（85～）などに出演する。1984年、ロン・ハワード監督作「スプラッシュ」で注目を集め、「ビッグ」（88）でアカデミー賞に初ノミネート。「フィラデルフィア」（93）、「フォレスト・ガンプ 一期一会」（94）でアカデミー主演男優賞を2年連続で受賞する快挙を成し遂げた。以降、「アポロ13」（95）や「グリーンマイル」（99）といった主演作が軒並み大ヒットし、「プライベート・ライアン」（98）と「キャスト・アウェイ」（00）で再びアカデミー主演ノミネート。ハリウッドを代表する演技派スター俳優として活躍を続け、ピクサーの「トイ・ストーリー」シリーズ（95～19）では主人公ウッディの声を担当、「ダ・ヴィンチ・コード」（06）に始まる人気ミステリーシリーズではロバート・ラングドン教授役を好演した。近年の主演作に「キャプテン・フィリップス」（13）、「ハドソン川の奇跡」（16）、「ペンタゴン・ペーパーズ 最高機密文書」（17）など。プロデューサーとしても活動する。
