フィラデルフィア生まれ、ニューヨーク育ち。父は俳優で母はダンサー。子どもの頃からブロードウェイ作品に参加し、「One Third of a Nation」（39）で映画デビュー。第2次世界大戦に従軍後、47年ごろからオフブロードウェイで活動し、50年からTVの監督をはじめる。映画では、初監督作「十二人の怒れる男」（57）がベルリン国際映画祭の金熊賞受賞という華々しいスタートを飾り、「未知への飛行」（64）、「質屋」（64）、「丘」（65）などで頭角を現す。「セルピコ」（73）、「狼たちの午後」（75）、「プリンス・オブ・シティ」（81）などニューヨークを舞台にした社会派作品は特に高い評価を受け、「オリエント急行殺人事件」（74）のイングリッド・バーグマンや「ネットワーク」（76）のピーター・フィンチ、フェイ・ダナウェイはオスカーを獲得。自身もアカデミー監督賞に計5回ノミネート、04年に名誉賞を受賞している。私生活では4度の結婚を経験。2011年4月9日、ニューヨークの自宅で悪性リンパ腫による合併症のため死去した。享年86歳。「その土曜日、7時58分」（07）が遺作となった。
