幼いときよりバレエを習い、8歳でTVデビューを飾り、11歳からは「サウンド・オブ・ミュージック」などでブロードウェイの舞台にも立っていたという天才子役だった。映画デビューは14歳で、79年の「無邪気な子供たち」。以後「フットルース」（84）で注目され、「ハイスクールはダンステリア」（85）で映画初主演。「L.A. ストーリー／恋が降る街」（91）、「ハネムーン・イン・ベガス（92）、「マイアミ・ラプソディー」（94）、「エド・ウッド」（94）などを経て、98年よりHBOチャンネルのTVシリーズ「SEX and the CITY」に主演。ニューヨークに暮らす独身女性のセックスライフを描いた本作で世界中の女性からカリスマ的な人気を得た。
