米イリノイ州出身。南イリノイ大学在学中に学生運営ラジオのDJを務め、卒業後はシカゴで即興演劇やスタンダップコメディの世界に浸る。1987年、人気番組「サタデー・ナイト・ライブ」の脚本家に抜てきされ、89年に同番組脚本でエミー賞を受賞。以降、コメディ番組の脚本を多数手がけ、その1本「デニス・ミラー・ショー」（92）では演技も披露した。2000年代には、パロディ映画「Run Ronnie Run」（02）で脚本、コメディ映画「プリズン・フリーク」（06）や「最凶家族計画」（07）で監督を手がけるなど、縦横無尽に活躍。大ヒットTVシリーズ「ブレイキング・バッド」（09～13）の弁護士ソウル・グッドマン役でブレイクを果たし、スピンオフドラマ「ベター・コール・ソウル」（15）の主人公も務めた。以降の出演作に「ペンタゴン・ペーパーズ 最高機密文書」（17）、「ストーリー・オブ・マイライフ わたしの若草物語」（19）など。痛快ハードボイルドアクション「Mr.ノーバディ」（20）では主演を務める。
