ストーンコールド・スティーブ・オースチンのリングネームでWWEを沸かせたプロレスラー。得意技は「ストーンコールド・スタナー」。6度のWWE王者のほか様々なタイトルを獲得した。プロレスラー、クリス・アダムスのもとでトレーニングを積んだ後、地元テキサスでデビューする。USWAやWCWにスタニング・スティーブ・オースチンの名前で出場。96年、WWE初戦に挑み、「レッスルマニア7」で勝利を納める。この頃から、ストーンコールドを名乗る。「キング・オブ・ザ・リング」になった時のスピーチ「3:16」は多くのプロレスファンの心に刻み込まれ、一時代を築いていった。リングの外では俳優としても活動。TVシリーズ「刑事ナッシュ・ブリッジス」（99～00）に初出演。「ロンゲスト・ヤード」でスクリーンデビューし、「監獄島」（07）で主演を務める。シルベスター・スタローン監督・主演作「エクスペンダブルズ」にも出演した。
