1960年代からコピーライターとして活躍していたが、70年に友人のデヴィッド・パットナムが製作した「小さな恋のメロディ」の脚本を書いたことで映画界入り。75年に演出したテレビ・ムービー“The Evacuees”が英国アカデミー賞を受賞、76年に「ダウンタウン物語」で劇場映画デビューを果たした。登場人物全員が子供で作られたこの作品の成功によって注目を浴び、次作「ミッドナイト・エクスプレス」がアカデミー賞６部門にノミネートされ、２部門を受賞したことで、名監督としての地位を確立した。他に「フェーム」、「ピンク・フロイド／ザ・ウォール」、「エンゼル・ハート」「エビータ」などがある。2002年には映画界への貢献が評価され、ナイトの爵位を授与している。近年は闘病生活を送っていたが20年7月、76歳でこの世を去った。
